TEMPERED GLASS
Tempered or toughened glass is a type of safety glass processed by controlled thermal treatments to increase its
strength compared with normal glass.
This safety glass obtaines a high resistance to mechanical and thermal shock. Tempered glass is 5 times stronger
than regular glass of equal thickness. Glass tempering is a process in which the glass is heated to a temperature
close to the melting temperature of the glass and then cooled suddenly in order to impart resistance to the glass.
The glass is heated to about 700 ° C in a special tempering oven and rapidly cooled down to give a tensile stress
of 10.000 psi to the glass surface.
When the glass breaks, it breaks apart into thousands of small fragments without sharp edges. Therefore, the
risk of injury is much lower than normal glass. The use of tempered glass is crucial for the safety of life and
property.
Tempered glass can be incorporated into insulating double glazing glass.
